About Serengeti

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most famous national park, and the setting for one of nature’s greatest spectacles – the Great Migration. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle traverse its endless plains in an eternal cycle of life and death.

Covering 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti ecosystem supports the largest concentration of large mammals on Earth, including all members of the Big Five and the highest density of lions in Africa.

“Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word “Siringet,” meaning “endless plains.” The park was established in 1951 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, recognized for its outstanding natural value.
